Ten years old, the age of the girl found tied up in a closet on Wednesday afternoon, anchors the scale of the rescue operation that unfolded in Oregon City.
U.S. Marshals Service tactical teams secured the child at a residence in Oregon City. The agency described finding her bound inside the storage space. Medics transported the girl to a hospital for evaluation. Vince Edgar Chavez attempted to flee through the rear of the property before officers took him into custody.
Investigators established that a male suspect entered the family’s Canby apartment at 1:39 a.m. He injured a 12-year-old child during the intrusion. The 12-year-old was rushed to a hospital and remained under care as of Wednesday afternoon. Police noted that the parents are cooperating with the ongoing inquiry.
Canby Police Department officials addressed public questions regarding an Amber Alert. They stated the department had not yet collected the specific data required to trigger such an alert. Carus Elementary, the girl’s school, deployed additional officers during Wednesday’s afternoon dismissal. The move came out of an abundance of caution.
The school district expressed solidarity with the family. “Our hearts are with this child and her family,” the district said. “Please know that we are here to support our students, staff and families in whatever ways we can.”
