A 10-year-old girl reported taken from an apartment early Wednesday was found that afternoon in a closet at an Oregon City home, and a suspect was arrested, the U.S. Marshals Service said. The girl was taken to a hospital after being found "tied up in a closet."
Investigators said a man entered an apartment at 1:39 a.m., hurt a 12-year-old child and left with the 10-year-old. The 12-year-old was taken to a hospital and remained under treatment as of Wednesday afternoon. Police said the parents are cooperating with the investigation.
U.S. Marshals tactical teams located the girl at a home in Oregon City. Vince Edgar Chavez tried to flee through the back of the house and was arrested, according to the U.S. Marshals.
Residents asked the Canby Police Department why no Amber Alert went out after the girl left the apartment. The department said it had not collected the information required to issue one.
Carus Elementary, where the 10-year-old is a student, added police presence during Wednesday's afternoon dismissal "out of an abundance of caution." The school district said: "Our hearts are with this child and her family. Please know that we are here to support our students, staff and families in whatever ways we can."
