A casual joke about restaurant decor has become a flashpoint in the current political debate. The comment, made by former President Barack Obama, drew immediate attention from the White House and senior economic officials. The exchange highlights a clash over perceptions of taste and affordability in the lead up to the midterm elections.
The Cheesecake Factory operates 218 locations in the United States. The chain generates $1.03 billion in annual revenue. It was founded in 1978 by David Overton. The brand is known for its distinctive interior design. Writer Elaine Godfrey described the aesthetic as a blend of ancient Egypt and Tuscany set in Las Vegas.
Obama made the initial remarks during a rally in Ohio on Saturday. He compared the gold-heavy renovations of the White House to a Cheesecake Factory. He stated that the space looked as if Saddam Hussein had opened the restaurant. He also mentioned that gold medallions were being superglued to the mantel in the Oval Office.
President Donald Trump responded to the criticism during a press briefing. He defended his taste by stating that he fixed the White House with the finest artisans in the world. He claimed the building is now in its best shape since 1792. He called Obama not a smart guy. The official White House account on X posted a photo of the restaurant’s large menu. The caption noted that the list of Trump’s accomplishments was bigger than the menu.
Vice President JD Vance accused Obama of elitism on social media. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent visited a Cheesecake Factory near the White House on Monday. He ate a French Dip Cheeseburger. He told journalists that he had a great meal. He suggested that the Martha’s Vineyard set should give the restaurant a try. He also compared the new Obama Presidential Center in Chicago to the tomb of Darth Vader.
Obama returned to the topic at a rally in Georgia on Wednesday. He said the White House was more upset about the joke than about policy issues like inflation. He noted that the administration mobilized a whole of government response. He said the Treasury Secretary was told to hold a press conference in front of the restaurant. He added that he had been a proud patron of the chain for many years.
President Trump later joked about dining costs at a rally in Texas. He said the $5,000 promised to adult citizens would only buy a hamburger and a small dessert. He advised supporters not to spend the money at his Mar-a-Lago club. He stated that the venue was not a good place for anyone who was price-conscious.
