Air traffic controllers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport began using a new digital system this week. The change replaces the paper strips that workers used for decades to track arriving and departing planes. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the shift at the world's busiest airport.

The electronic flight strips provide real-time data on aircraft movements. Controllers can now update information digitally without looking down at their desks. An FAA representative said this reduces physical movement and keeps eyes on the screen. The system also automatically alerts staff to changes like runway closures.

Previously, controllers managed operations by manually writing and organizing physical paper strips. The new method allows for faster responses to shifting weather and traffic patterns. It also improves coordination between different groups involved in daily airport operations.

Hartsfield-Jackson is the 26th airport in the United States to adopt this technology. The FAA stated the upgrade helps identify potential problems and manage changing traffic conditions. The move is part of a wider effort to modernize air traffic control while keeping the busy hub safe.
