Deer Tick will perform its new album, Coin-O-Matic, at The Basement East on Wednesday. The show begins at 8 p.m. at 917 Woodland St. in Nashville.
The band is led by singer and songwriter John McCauley. McCauley returned to his hometown of Providence, R.I., in 2021 after living in Nashville for ten years. The group conceived the new record as a tribute to the history of that city.
The music on Coin-O-Matic blends Americana with 1970s style rock. The track "Sweetest Things" shares sonic similarities with The Grateful Dead and The Climax Blues Band. Another song, "Endless Loop," is described as an unclassifiable piece of American rock and roll.
Deer Tick has a history of mixing mainstream rock with other genres. A 2010 review for the Nashville Scene described the band's 2009 album, Born on Flag Day, as a cross between The 13th Floor Elevators and America. The new release continues this pattern of defying standard genre categories.
The album draws comparisons to the recent work of Low Cut Connie. Tracks like "Endless Loop" and "Exit Door" fit stylistically with songs from Low Cut Connie's 2023 album, Art Dealers. The Americana folk duo DUG will open the evening for Deer Tick.
The new record is considered by some to be the band's best work to date. This assessment follows a long discography that includes several well-regarded releases. The performance at The Basement East marks the local release of this material.
