Milwaukee Public Schools will close all schools and district offices on Friday, October 30. The district cited the Milwaukee Brewers' World Series victory as the reason for the shutdown. This decision follows the team's championship win and the subsequent citywide celebrations.
Superintendent Brenda Cassellius announced the closure after a review of district operations. The team evaluated transportation routes, staffing levels, and food delivery logistics. MPS determined that the championship parade would create specific operations and safety impacts. The district found that these factors made a normal school day difficult to manage.
The closure affects all standard district activities. Milwaukee Recreation will also cancel its usual programs for the day. However, high school postseason athletic events will continue as scheduled. This exception allows student athletes to compete during the championship week.
Cassellius acknowledged the disruption for families in a district statement. She noted that the school board considered all available options before finalizing the plan. The superintendent joined the community in celebrating the historic moment for the Brewers and the city. MPS emphasized that the decision prioritized the safety of students and staff.
The Milwaukee Brewers are currently the World Series champions. The city has organized a parade and celebration in their honor. MPS staff will use the closure to prepare for these events. The district expects to resume regular operations on the following Monday.
