More than 8,500 children in Virginia have received personalized clothing packages from Boxes of Basics since the organization launched in 2018. The Virginia-based nonprofit employs approximately 1,000 volunteers to assemble these custom care items for students who struggle with access to proper clothing.

The initiative addresses a widespread issue where an estimated 20 million children nationwide experience clothing insecurity. This condition is defined by a lack of access to clothing that fits well, suits the current season, and remains in good condition. Industry estimates suggest two out of five children across the country face this shortage.

Sarah Tyndall founded the group after observing a direct need in her community. She recalled a specific student who avoided attending school because his garments were too small and worn out. After receiving a package from the organization, the boy began waking up 30 minutes earlier each morning to select his outfit. Tyndall stated the decision to start the organization was a logical response to helping those children.

The process begins when schools and shelters identify specific children who require assistance. These institutions provide the organization with detailed information, including body sizes, preferred colors, and favorite characters. Volunteers at a central warehouse use this data to select specific clothing items for children they will never meet in person.

Each box contains a standardized list of items designed to cover daily needs. The package includes four school outfits, four play outfits, and one dress-up outfit. It also provides new shoes, socks, and underwear, along with two age-appropriate books, a set of pajamas, and a hygiene kit. A duffle bag is included for children who need a way to carry their new garments.

Volunteers hand wrap every outfit and include a handwritten note in each box. Cheryl Burns, a volunteer, said the message is her favorite part of the process. She writes a short note expressing hope that the recipient enjoys the selected clothes and books, finishing with a smiley face. Burns explained that seeing someone smile brings her joy.

The organization currently operates within Virginia but has set a goal to expand its reach to other states. The clothing in the boxes is donated, with some items being new and others being gently used. The nonprofit continues to rely on this volunteer model to distribute the packages to identified students.
