Vanderbilt University marked the completion of its Central Neighborhood Residential Colleges project with a topping-out ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 1, during Homecoming weekend. The event celebrated the placement of the final structural beam on the highest point of the building frame.
Hundreds of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members gathered to sign a gold structural beam before the official ceremony. This long-standing construction tradition allows the university community to leave a permanent mark on the building’s history.
The project consists of three new residential colleges designed to expand the university's residential college program. The buildings will feature mixed-use spaces for academic collaboration, green areas, and a variety of single and suite living options for students.
Carl Rodrigues, vice chancellor for real estate, facilities, and development, stated that the ceremony represents more than a construction milestone for Vanderbilt. He noted that every decision in the architecture and common spaces reflects the university's commitment to creating an environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and personally.
The new development is inspired by the West End Neighborhood project, which previously included the Zeppos, Rothschild, and Carmichael colleges. Central Neighborhood will host the three new residential colleges along with lush green space and strategically designed areas to support the residential college experience.
When completed, more than 1,300 students will call Central Neighborhood home. Two of the residential colleges are scheduled for completion in August 2028, and the final college will open in August 2029.
