Learjet crash in Florida kills nine, including family of four
NTSB investigators say the aircraft broke apart before impact, with weather a primary focus of the ongoing probe.

A private Learjet crashed into a residential street in Greenacres, Florida, on Sunday, killing all nine people on board. The incident occurred near West Palm Beach, sending debris across a wide area of the neighborhood.
A family representative confirmed the identities of the passengers in a social media post. The group included Adam Robinson, Helen Sharp, their children Emma and Charlie, Rachael Reed, Charmi Fehr, and Anita Maria Cetina. One pilot, 20-year-old Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, was identified by her mother. The identity of the second pilot has not yet been confirmed.
The investigation began immediately after the plane struck the road and exploded. National Transportation Safety Board member Tom Chapman addressed the public on Monday. He stated that evidence suggests the aircraft started breaking up before it hit the ground. Chapman noted that debris could be found far from the primary impact site.
Aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti offered technical insight into the event. He said key tail components may have been lost during turbulence or the subsequent nose dive. Guzzetti explained that losing these parts would make the plane uncontrollable, resulting in the steep trajectory observed just before impact.
Weather conditions are a major focus of the probe. Rain fell heavily in the region on Sunday. One pilot reported icing conditions at high altitude in communications with air traffic control. FlightRadar24 data combined with the plane's path suggests it flew into a rapidly expanding storm cell. Investigators must still determine the specific conditions at 35,000 feet.
Investigators are working to recover the cockpit voice recorder, which was originally installed in the aircraft. NTSB investigator Timothy Monville said the scene work would take several days. He identified the recovery of major wreckage from the crater on the roadway as the biggest obstacle to the investigation.
The plane had been flying at a high altitude when it began its descent. The crash site remains active as teams continue to search for parts and data recorders. No official cause for the crash has been determined yet.
