Nashville residents and shoppers across Davidson County face tighter budgets this holiday season. The average consumer plans to spend approximately $880 on gifts, according to a new report from NerdWallet. This figure represents a 21% decline from the previous year, when the average planned expenditure was slightly above $1,100.

Kim Palmer, a personal finance expert at NerdWallet, attributed the decrease to widespread inflation and higher prices across various categories. She noted that the financial pressure extends beyond gift purchases, with many individuals also reducing travel plans and opting to stay closer to home.

Palmer described the core issue as financial stress caused by sustained price increases. She explained that consumers are actively seeking ways to reduce expenses while maintaining seasonal traditions. The result is a general reduction in overall spending during the holiday period.

To manage these costs, Palmer advised shoppers to create gift lists early and distribute purchases over several months rather than concentrating them in December. She also recommended tracking specific items and waiting for price drops that often occur as the holidays approach.

The expert cautioned against relying on buy now, pay later services, which allow consumers to spread payments over time. She warned that this method creates debt that must be repaid, potentially causing strain when January arrives. Shoppers should also avoid dipping into emergency savings and resist impulse buys to stay within their set limits.
