Dr. Rhea Rogers, a board-certified physician and host of the television program Aging Untold, reports that GLP-1 drugs are now being prescribed for some children in Louisiana. These medications, which have gained widespread popularity among adults, are being utilized to manage pediatric weight loss when other methods do not produce results.

The push for these prescriptions follows a statewide effort to reduce obesity rates. At Magnolia Woods Elementary in Baton Rouge, students are currently learning about healthy eating habits and exercise. These educational initiatives are part of a broader strategy to address childhood health issues.

However, Rogers notes that for a subset of young patients, lifestyle modifications alone are insufficient. She explained that genetics and hormonal dysregulation can make it difficult for children to lose weight through movement and dietary changes alone. When a child becomes significantly overweight, these hormonal issues often require medical intervention.

Rogers described GLP-1 agonists as effective tools for reducing what she calls food noise and food chatter. She also noted that these drugs have anti-inflammatory properties. She emphasized that some individuals simply need additional medical support due to their specific physiological challenges.

Experts identify specific criteria for these prescriptions. For patients with diabetes, the age requirement for treatment can begin at 10 years old. For weight loss purposes, the ideal candidate typically has a body mass index at or above the 95th percentile. Additionally, the child must have already attempted lifestyle changes without success. This includes patients who have developed hormone problems that require direct medical treatment.

Rogers cautioned that the medication is not a miracle cure but rather a tool within a larger treatment plan. She stated that physicians must treat the entire clinical scenario rather than focusing solely on the drug. The cost of these medications remains a primary barrier for many families. For patients who cannot afford the prescription or choose to avoid medication, the current standard of care remains well-balanced meals and a healthy lifestyle.
