A shooting near the Magic City Classic in Birmingham, Alabama, left one person dead and at least eight others injured Saturday night.
Birmingham Police Department officers arrived at the 400 block of Graymont Avenue around 7:50 p.m. The department suspended all tailgating activity in that area upon arrival.
Investigators recovered multiple firearms at the scene. Police detained one person and transported the individual to headquarters for questioning.
As of early Sunday, authorities reported that one victim remained in critical condition. The other seven injured individuals were in stable condition. No police officers or first responders were hurt in the incident.
The Magic City Classic is the largest historically Black college and university football game in the United States. Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett described the event as the city's largest gathering and called the shooting a "senseless act of violence."
Pickett stated that other law enforcement leaders offered quick support to the Birmingham department. He said officers displayed courage by running toward the gunfire to triage and aid injured people. Pickett thanked the personnel for being able to return home to their families that night.
