Regional border tensions escalated sharply following a series of violent incidents between Jordan and Syria.

Jordanian fighter jets struck a village in the southern Daraa province on Monday. The military stated the target was a location housing terrorist organizations. Syrian health officials confirmed that five people died in the strike. The victims included women, children, and an elderly man. Jordan said the attack killed and wounded several terrorists but provided no further specifics.

The airstrike followed a shooting at a Greek Orthodox church funeral in Karak on Friday. That attack left nine people dead and 34 others injured. Senior government security officials announced on Monday that Jordanian forces had arrested three suspects. The Public Security Directorate said the men were two brothers and their brother-in-law. Authorities found the group hiding in an abandoned house in Karak before dawn. Jordan's Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya told state-affiliated television that all three attackers were Jordanian nationals.

Syrian authorities said they had not received advance notification of the Monday airstrike. They stated that Jordan had coordinated the operation with the Syrian government. In response to the strike, Syria closed the Nassib border crossing. This is the only passenger and commercial crossing between the two countries. Syrian officials said the closure suspends all traffic in both directions to protect travelers and workers. They added that they opened direct communication channels with Jordan and began comprehensive investigations into the targeting.

The Jordanian military said the action was a direct retaliation for the church attack. Syrian officials are reviewing the full circumstances of the strike. The border closure remains in effect as both nations conduct their inquiries.
