A two-point margin separates Lamine Yamal from Harry Kane in the artificial intelligence models predicting the 2026 Ballon d'Or winner. According to data released by the French analytics firm Avisia, Yamal holds a 23 percent probability of winning the award, which recognizes the best footballer of the 2025-26 season. Kane follows as the second favorite with a 21 percent chance. Kylian Mbappe and Rodri are tied for third place, each with a 19 percent probability. Lionel Messi rounds out the top five with an 18 percent chance of claiming a record-extending ninth title. The ceremony to announce the winner is scheduled for less than 24 hours from now at the London Palladium.

The 2025-26 season produced a tight contest among the three leading candidates. Yamal, the 19-year-old Spain forward, won the World Cup with his national team and the La Liga title with Barcelona. His personal statistics were affected by injury during the campaign. Kane scored 73 goals in the previous season, the highest total for a player since Lionel Messi recorded 82 in 2011-12. He won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich but finished third with England at the World Cup. Mbappe led La Liga with 25 goals and the Champions League with 15 goals. He also set a World Cup record with 12 goals and won the Golden Boot, but he did not win a major trophy with either his club or country.

Bookmakers present a different picture than the AI models. Betting markets currently favor Kane as the outright favorite, assigning him approximately 70 percent odds of winning. This discrepancy highlights the split between quantitative data models and traditional betting markets as the deadline approaches. Avisia noted that it correctly identified the top five candidates for the 2025 award, which was won by Ousmane Dembele.

Players and managers have expressed their own preferences for the recipient. Diego Simeone, manager of Atletico Madrid, stated that Messi deserves the honor after retiring from international duty. He said, "After the World Cup, he played at his age.. No doubt about it." Former Italy international Marco Materazzi agreed, noting that Messi performed at a high level at 38 years old. Jude Bellingham, who is also shortlisted, supported Kane, describing him as honest and hard-working. He added, "It's definitely possible" for Kane to win. Anthony Gordon backed his Barcelona teammate Yamal, calling the young player's achievements "ridiculous" and stating he is on a "whole other level." Aurelien Tchouameni supported Mbappe, citing the Frenchman's "incredible season."

Historical trends suggest that winning a major tournament is often required for the Ballon d'Or. Only four of the previous 19 winners failed to lift a Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America title in their award year. Yamal is positioned to become the youngest recipient in the award's history if he wins. He would surpass Brazilian Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won in 1997.

The decision will be made public at the London Palladium ceremony. The three primary contenders are Yamal, Mbappe, and Kane. Yamal and Mbappe have publicly campaigned for the award, while Kane has kept a lower profile. The final result will determine which player is recognized as the top performer for the 2025-26 season.
