Three years after a 17-year-old Ohio student died by suicide, police have arrested a man in his early 20s in connection with the case. James, a high school student in Streetsboro, died on Nov. 19, 2022, after being targeted in a sextortion scheme on Instagram.
The incident began when the teen believed he was exchanging photos with a 19-year-old girl who contacted him on the social media platform. James' mother, Tamia, said the pressure started immediately after that exchange. Within 24 hours, her son received more than 200 text messages and dozens of phone calls.
Tamia stated that the callers, whom she believes were a group of people, threatened to ruin her son's life unless he paid them thousands of dollars. The volume of communication and the specific threats placed intense pressure on James in the days leading up to his death.
Streetsboro police, working with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and Homeland Security Investigations, traced the suspect through an IP address. That digital footprint allowed investigators to connect the man in his early 20s to the crime. The suspect is currently in jail and will stand trial.
The case highlights the speed with which online interactions can escalate into coordinated harassment. The investigation combined local law enforcement with federal digital units to identify the individual behind the threats. Prosecutors say the suspect faces a potential sentence of more than 10 years in prison if convicted.
