A Davidson County mother's work trip to Las Vegas ended with her arrest after her 9-year-old son was hurt at home with no adult present. Irene Miller, 50, faces four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm, according to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office.
A child called 911 on Oct. 21 after a dumbbell fell on the 9-year-old boy's head. Deputies who answered the call found four children at the home, ages 14, 12, 11 and 9, with no adult watching them. Fire rescue took the 9-year-old to the hospital, and he was later discharged.
Miller told a responding deputy she had been working in Las Vegas since Oct. 18 and planned to return Oct. 23. She said a babysitter drove from Tampa each morning to get the children ready for school and checked on them after school, but Miller did not require the sitter to stay overnight.
Detectives met Miller when she left her flight from Las Vegas on Oct. 23. She was booked into the Orange County jail on the four neglect counts. Authorities contacted the children's father and the kids were taken to his home.
