Baltimore residents face a new educational campaign this month aimed at reducing winter home fires. The Baltimore City Fire Department and Red Cross of Central Maryland released the first of four videos on November 2. These resources will appear weekly throughout the month to guide households through cold weather safety.

Last holiday season, local fire incidents forced hundreds of people from their homes. Red Cross teams assisted families affected by nearly 100 fires in November and December 2025. Nationally, the organization responds to roughly 20% more residential fires during these two months compared to other periods.

Lenora Henry, executive director of the Red Cross of Central Maryland, stated that home fires represent the most frequent emergency for local disaster response teams. Fire Chief James W. Wallace noted that many winter fires are preventable. He emphasized that working smoke alarms and practiced escape routes make a difference in outcomes.

Officials recommend specific actions for households. Families should test smoke alarms and replace batteries as needed. Space heaters must stay at least 3 feet from combustible materials. Residents should avoid overloading extension cords and never leave cooking equipment unattended. Practicing a family fire escape plan is also part of the guidance.

The campaign ends on November 23 with a live fire safety demonstration. The event takes place at the Baltimore City Fire Department Training Academy. Households affected by fire can call 1-800-RED CROSS for free disaster assistance. The Red Cross provides support to eligible families after an incident.
