Construction crews began work on a new interchange at the junction of I-65 and US-31W in Goodlettsville on Wednesday, marking the start of a major road design change near the Davidson and Sumner County line.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation is building a Diverging Diamond Interchange, or DDI, where the two highways meet. This specific project is the third phase of the overall widening of I-65 from the Kentucky state line to Nashville, which started in March 2025.

The DDI design changes how traffic moves through the intersection. Drivers will briefly drive on the opposite side of the road to pass under the interstate, then return to their original side. TDOT states this layout reduces conflict points and improves safety for motorists.

Work on the site is currently focused on grading the land and setting up drainage systems. Once those foundations are complete, crews will install retaining walls and curbs for the new structure.

The interstate widening is expected to finish in November 2027. Drivers in Goodlettsville should anticipate intermittent closures on I-65 as construction progresses, adding to the traffic impacts already felt from the ongoing widening project.

The new interchange is expected to be completed by November 2027, alongside the rest of the widening work. This timeline aligns with the end date for the third phase of the interstate improvements.
