Two first-year students at Lipscomb University have begun laboratory work before completing their freshman year.

The university selected Matilda Bennett and Natalie Sublett for its Biology Research Fellows program. Bennett is a biology major from Nashville. Sublett is a molecular biology major from Murfreesboro. The selection process prioritized academic records and alignment with the school's faith-based mission.

The fellowship program offers specific financial and academic benefits to its participants. Each fellow receives a $2,000 annual scholarship. This award is renewable for four years, totaling $8,000. The money supplements other financial aid students may already receive. Fellows must keep a 3.5 grade point average to remain eligible. The program guarantees a research lab placement starting in the freshman year. It also ensures admission to the competitive Summer Research Fellowship program within the first two years of study.

Beth Conway, the chair of the Department of Biology, confirmed the selection criteria. She noted that both students demonstrated strong academic achievement and a commitment to the university's specific mission. Conway stated that the program allows students to apply classroom knowledge to hands-on scientific discovery early in their degrees.

Bennett graduated from St. Cecilia Academy. She cited the close community and faculty access as primary reasons for choosing Lipscomb. She expressed interest in cancer and molecular research. She described the opportunity as a chance to explore different areas of scientific inquiry.

Sublett graduated from Lipscomb Academy. Her parents both attended the university. She previously participated in IMPACT, a summer youth event on campus. She plans to attend medical school and work as a physician. Her research interests include cancer and genetics. She said studying molecular biology helps her understand the human body better.

Both students are currently in their first semester. Bennett looks forward to new discoveries through hands-on learning. Sublett described the campus as a welcoming community. The fellows will work in assigned labs while meeting the program's academic requirements. They will continue their studies and research duties through the upcoming academic year.
