The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1,519 points, or 2.9 percent, on Wednesday afternoon. The Nasdaq composite gained 1.9 percent during the same period. This marked a sharp increase in stock prices following the U.S. midterm elections held Tuesday.
President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Wednesday to comment on the rally. He stated that the stock market hit another record high, noting this was the 91st record high in a short period of time and less than two years. Trump claimed that 401(k) retirement accounts were "through the roof" and called the performance "Record Setting All!"
The market surge occurred after the Republican Party lost sole control of Washington. Democrats appear set to take control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Multiple GOP states and government positions flipped to the Democratic Party during the election cycle. Wall Street experts noted that this outcome may represent a preferred political scenario for investors, contributing to the price jump.
Historically, U.S. stocks tend to perform well in the months following midterm elections, regardless of the winning party. However, this year’s results were particularly harsh for the Republican Party, which had held power for the previous four years.
Trump retained executive authority over key areas including defense, foreign policy, and trade. In an interview with Fox News, the president said he would work with the new Democratic leadership. "Congratulations to the Democrats," Trump said. "I think the Democrats did a good job. They fought hard. They’ve been fighting me for a long time. This fight’s been going on for ages."
When asked about collaborating with the opposition, Trump added that he would do so. "I think the Democrats want to work with me," he said.
