The race for Illinois' 8th Congressional District enters its final hours as Melissa Bean and Jennifer Davis appeal to voters on Tuesday. The two candidates are competing to succeed Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, who is not seeking reelection. Their campaigns offer different approaches to the role, with Bean leveraging past service and Davis emphasizing a new perspective.

Bean, a Democrat, served in the district from 2005 to 2011. She is seeking to return to Congress after a period away from federal office. During a stop at a Metra station in Des Plaines, she greeted commuters while campaigning across the western suburbs. She described the current political moment as urgent and stated she wants to bring experience to a shifting Congress. Bean said she previously worked on equal pay legislation, the Affordable Care Act, insurance reforms, and internet safety for children.

Bean acknowledged that younger voters often express frustration with career politicians. She proposed a plan called Empowering Young Americans to expand economic opportunities. She noted that housing and healthcare costs are unaffordable for many young people who are working hard and attending school. Bean said the country can get these issues back on track by focusing on reducing costs for Americans. She also cited her endorsement from the Committee to Preserve Social Security. Bean argued that Social Security is fixable and should provide trust for both current beneficiaries and young people who are paying into the system.

Davis, a Republican, is running for office for the first time. She grew up on a farm in Wisconsin and founded a software technology company at age 17. She agreed that Social Security should remain intact for current recipients and younger Americans. Davis said voters frequently ask about reducing the national debt and lowering taxes. She proposed doubling the SALT exemption to provide tax relief on property tax bills. Davis argued that the state and federal governments should work together instead of being combative. She said her background gives her an outside perspective that she can bring to the table.

Davis emphasized the need for the United States to remain competitive in artificial intelligence development. She said new approaches are needed to address concerns about data centers. She stated that while data centers are necessary, they should not be located next to schools, hospitals, or neighborhoods. Davis said the goal is to avoid impacting the quality of life for local residents. Although she is running as a Republican in a district that often supports Democrats, she said voters are looking for practical solutions rather than partisan politics. Davis said no party has a patent on a good idea and that focusing on people changes the dynamic of governance.

Both candidates say they are focused on reaching voters across the district before Election Day. Bean emphasizes her experience in Congress and specific legislative records. Davis promotes a fresh perspective on the challenges facing the country and specific policy proposals like the SALT exemption. The district is in Cook County, Illinois. The election will take place on Tuesday.
