The 2026 TCS New York City Marathon will feature a unique entry on Sunday when a man pushes his cousin through the full 26.2-mile distance in a specialized racing wheelchair. Gio Alaimo, 28, has committed to guiding Luigi Sorce, 22, from start to finish as part of a duo team.
Sorce, who hails from Agrigento, Sicily, was born with cerebral palsy that limits his mobility. The pair received confirmation for their entry roughly four months ago. Alaimo stated that the initiative began when Sorce proposed applying to the race to see New York City in a single day. Alaimo agreed to the challenge, noting that they successfully secured their spots.
Alaimo has been preparing for the event by training throughout the city with the racing chair. He described the preparation process as demanding but manageable relative to the daily challenges Sorce faces. "The training has not been easy, but compared to the life my cousin's living, it's nothing," Alaimo said.
The participants view the race as more than a physical endeavor. Alaimo emphasized that the goal is to alter Sorce's experience of life and demonstrate that participation is not restricted by the ability to walk. He believes the effort highlights the role of support and belief from others.
Sorce has described the marathon as a chance to fulfill a long-held desire to visit the city. Alaimo anticipates that the race day will be a memorable occasion for all involved. "It will be one of the best days of his life, my life, and everyone who can cheer with us," he said.
The race is scheduled to begin on Sunday. Broadcast coverage of the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon will start at 7:00 a.m. on Channel 7. ABC 7 and ESPN2 have provided coverage of the event since 2013.
