Vanderbilt Nurse Studies Gene-Based Pain Relief
Lori Schirle uses DNA data and brain-focused methods to move pain treatment beyond standard opioid prescriptions.

Lori Schirle, an assistant professor and certified registered nurse anesthetist at Vanderbilt University, is developing new ways to manage chronic pain without relying solely on opioids. She serves as a nurse scientist and leads research aimed at understanding individual differences in pain response.
The work addresses a common clinical problem. Millions of people suffer from severe chronic pain or know someone who does. Opioids have remained the standard post-surgical treatment for decades. However, patient reactions vary widely. Some patients find relief while others face negative consequences. Schirle’s study looks for biological markers that can predict these outcomes before treatment begins.
Her team analyzes genetic data to identify which patients are likely to experience persistent discomfort after surgery. The goal is to determine who might not respond well to opioids. This approach allows for more targeted care rather than a uniform prescription model. The research focuses on the specific DNA variations that influence how the body processes pain signals.
Schirle also explores innovations in personalized treatment that target the brain directly. This new approach moves away from traditional medication models. The project receives funding from the National Institutes of Health. It is also supported by Vanderbilt’s Seeding Success Grant program. These resources help advance the study of non-opioid alternatives for easing pain.
The findings are being shared through the Quantum Potential podcast. Schirle appears in the latest episode to discuss her work. She explains how genetic differences can guide clinical decisions. The episode is now available on podcast platforms. Vanderbilt Research hosts the podcast and provides additional information at vanderbilt.edu/research.
